Cute Balsams for the New Year!
This is perhaps the first time I tried my hands on growing flowering annuals. I wanted to grow some flowers to break the monotony of vegetables and herbs on my community garden.
I grew something that was simple and rather fool-proof. It is good for children too - the balsam plant.
I got some balsam seeds from Known You Seeds in their family packet form and to my surprise, the variety I got was somewhat a dwarf, compact form. Besides the compactness, the flowers are all double and really huge and as you can see from the pictures below, the plant's literally covered with its gigantic blooms!
What's more there is a slight fragrance to the flowers! I did not know balsams have fragrance! Unfortunately, this variety doesn't seem to set seeds as readily as the normal ones we always see. No fruits are seen, to date. The plants grew really quickly. They flowered within 6 weeks?
I have only got two colour growing in my community garden now at present - crimson and purple!
Happy New Year all and I hope you share the same happiness I got upon seeing these balsam flowers!
